Storing Your Stuff Like a Pro: 10 Easy Tips to Keep Your Belongings Safe
Renting a storage unit is a total game-changer when you need some extra breathing room at home, you're in the middle of a move, or you just have things you aren't quite ready to let go of yet. But here's the thing: how you pack and set up your unit makes a huge difference when you actually need to find something later on.To help you out, we've put together 10 simple tips to make sure you get the most out of your space without the headache!
1. Stick with Sturdy, Similar-Sized Boxes
Trust us, good-quality boxes are worth it. They stack way better and won't cave in after a few months. Plus, if your boxes are roughly the same size, you can stack them higher and more safely, making use of all that vertical space.Pro tip: put the heavy stuff on the bottom and save the top for your lighter, more fragile items.
2. Label, Label, Label!
You might think you'll remember exactly what's in every box, but trust us—six months down the road, it's all going to look the same.Label each box clearly on at least two sides. Instead of just writing "Kitchen," try being a bit more specific, like:Kitchen – Pots, Pans & Baking DishesA few extra seconds of labeling now will save you a lot of digging later!
3. Leave Yourself an Aisle
It's tempting to cram everything in tight, but try to leave a little walkway down the middle. You'll be so glad you did when you need to grab something from the very back without having to unload the whole unit first.
4. Keep the Basics Up Front
Take a moment to think about what you might actually need to get to while your stuff is in storage. Things like holiday decor, important files, kids' gear, or business supplies should stay right near the door where they're easy to reach. The items you won't need for a year? Those are the ones that can go in the back.
5. Give Your Furniture some Love
Before you move furniture in, make sure it's clean and totally dry.Cover things up with old sheets or breathable furniture covers to keep the dust away. If you can take things apart—like table legs or bed frames—it'll save a ton of space. Just keep the screws in a baggy and tape it right to the piece so you don't lose them!
6. Give the Walls some Space
Try not to lean your boxes or furniture directly against the walls. A little "breathing room" goes a long way. If you can, use some pallets or shelving to keep your boxes off the floor and help keep everything organized.
7. No Damp Stuff Allowed!
This is a big one: make sure everything is 100% dry before it goes into your unit.Pay extra attention to things like patio furniture, appliances, or sports gear that might have been outside or near water. You definitely don't want to trap moisture inside a box!
8. Prep Your Appliances
If you're storing a fridge, washer, or freezer, give it a good scrub and make sure it's bone-dry first.Leave the doors cracked open just a bit to let the air circulate, and—of course—make sure there's no food left inside!
9. Think About Climate Control
For some things, a climate-controlled unit is a lifesaver, especially if you're storing them for a long time.Items that may benefit from climate-controlled storage include:
- Wood furniture
- Electronics
- Photographs
- Important documents
- Books
- Artwork
- Musical instruments
- Certain collectibles
- Items sensitive to extreme temperature changes
If you're not sure if you need it, just ask our property manager! We're happy to help you figure out what makes the most sense for your stuff.
10. Safety First: No No-Go Items
Storage units are great, but they aren't built for everything.Keep things like flammable materials, explosives, perishable food, or anything against the rules out of your unit. When in doubt, just check with us first!
